Being a teacher and a coach can’t be an easy task, right? On last week, I had the chance to chat with Coach Derrick Farrow of Gentry High School about his new role as head coach of the football team.
After graduating from Gentry High School in 2000, he further his education at Louisiana Tech University and graduated in 2005. While in college, he majored in Sociology with a minor in Psychology. While in school he played football, basketball, baseball, and track.

The first question I was asked was: How he was feeling about his new position as head football coach? “I feel good about it, of course, some things would’ve been more in tact, if I had gotten the job or the position a little bit earlier., but I feel pretty good about it. I feel like things are coming along well.” When asked if the job is harder than expected he stated, “No, I’ve been coaching for around 15 years,. I got some stuff added to my plate, but for the most part, I pretty much knew what to expect and what expected of me.” How far do you think the boys will go with your coaching skills? “They will go as far as their hearts will take them.” Lastly, I personally wondered if he liked coaching or teaching more? “That’s a trick question…coaching.” From seeing him on the sidelines and his interactions with students and staff, throughout the day, you can see he clearly loves what he does.
Let’s continue cheer on our football team through the wins and loses, as he continues to lead them this season.
